Windows vista annoyances
« on: December 30, 2007, 01:51:52 pm »
Yeah, I admit it, I upgraded recently.  I decided it was better to get it over with than have it forced on me when I eventually have to replace my laptop.

That out of the way, some things that annoy me about vista:

The lack of the classic Storm theme.  I loved that theme :(

The lack of an ability to modify file types without using third party tools or the registry editor.  Don't get me wrong, I understand why they removed this considering how many times I had to help people fix their computers after managing to associate .exe files with notepad while trying to change the default icon for JPG files (yeah, don't ask...)

The start menu of doom: Yeah, this is special.  If you haven't had the displeasure of having to use it yet, take the XP start menu and bastardize it so that instead of opening a new pane for all programs it changes the Pinned/Recent programs pane.  Yes folks, that is the new vista start menu.

I'll update this topic as I find more things that annoy me about it.

Are there any classic themes at all?

Just the standard windows 2000 theme.

You can customize it by hand to use the colors you want though, but yeah, they basically said "Fuck you" to the people who won't want the fancy new Aero themes (and yes, they treat the Vista Basic theme the same as Windows Classic...)

I have heard that a lot of people who got Vista are now switching back to xp b/c vista is being such an ass.

It can be, but once you get used to some of it's odder quirks (see the start menu example I gave :P) it's not so bad.

Honestly, my biggest complaint of the moment is getting a UAC prompt for just wanting to VIEW the device manager.  Well that and the fact that the Administrator account is totally disabled by default.  Thank god it's easy to enable if you know which tools to use to enable it. :)

You know, I wouldn't get it until XP is finished. Since I just got it and 98 just finished, it could be a few years. Hopefully, most of the problem will be fixed by then.
